Why Laser Hair Removal Requires Multiple Sessions
Laser hair removal targets hair follicles in the active growth phase (anagen). At any given time, only a portion of your follicles are in this phase — the rest are resting or transitioning. That's why a single session can't catch everything.
Each session hits a different batch of follicles in their active phase. Over a series of treatments, you progressively reduce the number of active follicles until remaining hair is fine, sparse, and manageable. The result isn't always 100% permanent removal — it's a significant, lasting reduction that most clients find completely transformative.
Session Count by Body Area
These ranges reflect what most clients at Nuvera experience. Individual results vary based on hair and skin type (more on that below).
- Upper lip: 4–6 sessions — facial hair cycles faster, which is why sessions are spaced only 4 weeks apart here
- Chin and jawline: 5–7 sessions — hormonal hair tends to be stubborn and may need occasional touch-ups long-term
- Underarms: 4–6 sessions — one of the fastest-responding areas; hair is coarse and responds well to laser
- Bikini line: 6–8 sessions — coarse hair responds quickly, but the area has more variation in hair density
- Lower legs: 6–8 sessions — larger surface area means more follicles to cover over the cycle
- Full legs: 6–8 sessions — same cycle reasoning as lower legs, just more ground to cover per session
- Back or chest: 6–9 sessions — coarser body hair responds well, but coverage area extends treatment time per session
Factors That Change Your Session Count
Two people booking the same area can need very different numbers of sessions. The main variables:
- Hair colour: Dark, coarse hair absorbs laser energy most efficiently. Light brown, red, grey, or blonde hair absorbs less, which typically means more sessions are needed
- Skin tone: Lighter skin tones allow higher energy settings, which increases efficacy per session. Darker skin tones require adjusted settings for safety, which can add 1–2 sessions to the count
- Hormonal factors: Conditions like PCOS stimulate ongoing hair growth, which can mean more sessions and more frequent maintenance over time
- Consistency between sessions: Skipping or delaying appointments throws off the hair cycle timing and reduces results per session
What Happens Between Sessions
You'll notice treated hair shedding over the 1–3 weeks following each session. This is normal — the follicle has been damaged and the hair shaft is being pushed out. Avoid plucking or waxing between appointments; shaving is fine. Sun exposure should be avoided on treated areas, which is worth planning around if you're spending summers in the Okanagan.
Most clients see noticeable thinning after sessions 2–3, and significant reduction by session 4–5. The final sessions are largely cleanup.
When to Stop — and What Maintenance Looks Like
Once you've completed your recommended series, most clients are done with regular treatments. Some areas — particularly hormonal zones like the chin — may benefit from a touch-up session once a year. We'll give you an honest assessment of where you're at after each treatment so you're never paying for sessions you don't need.
